“I love my thick nappy curls,” Eden confessed. “But I noticed when my hair is all laid & straight, I get approached way more by guys. Otherwise, black men treat me like my natural hair makes me instantly ugly. That’s kinda why I approached you first.”

She removed her headband & ran her fingers through her huge, natural curls, as her brown skin glistened in the daylight. I marveled at her beauty before replying.

“Some males who are hesitant to approach women with natural hair are intimidated by the confidence you’re displaying by wearing your natural hair & he cowers at the possibility of you rejecting him,” I explained.

Eating for Success in Weight Loss

Posted in Uncategorized on September 29, 2013 by fabfit4life

Most people don’t really appreciate how important the diet is when trying to achieve a fitness goal. People jump right into working out, going hard even, and after some time find themselves discouraged because the results don’t mirror the effort. No matter how hard you go at the gym if you don’t go as hard or even harder in the kitchen, your gym efforts simply won’t matter. Weight loss is tied to healthy eating and exercising, with eating actually being the most important part. Eating 5-6 times a day at regular intervals will boost your metabolism which in turn will facilitate weight loss. Now just because you should eat frequently doesn’t mean you should eat just anything. Think of your body as a luxury vehicle. Would you put low grade or diesel fuel in it? No! You would put high grade premium gas in it to get optimal performance. Same thought process should go into what you should put into your body. Proteins, complex carbs, vegetables, fruits and water are all staples. Listen you want results? You gotta work for it and the work begins in the kitchen. Point. Blank. Period.

A** to grass everyday all day!

Posted in Exercise 101 with tags , , , on July 25, 2013 by fabfit4life

****I apologize upfront for the graphic image but seriously, folk need to wake up and catch a real clue about the potential danger/damage of plumping***.
Here lately there seems to be a huge fascination with the ultra curvy women. Everywhere you look the ‘thick’ look is in. No longer is it ‘in’ to be waif or ‘model thin’. These days women want curves, yes the shapely hips, large boobs and lets not forget the ‘twerk-able’ booty. To the extent that women are resorting to horrendous methods in order to achieve this look. Butt shots have almost become the norm in some industries and are often the ‘go to’ method when one wants to get that booty right. The bigger the better, often times the waist to hip/booty ratio is beyond unreal. I get it some women want to be draggin a wagon behind them. But at what cost?? Seriously these jack leg, back door plumping parties are dangerous. Women are injecting themselves with caulk, motor oil, jack leg silicone, etc. Going to often untrained, unlicensed people in motels, laying on bathroom floors, enduring countless injections with who knows what all in the name of ‘beauty’. Seriously?!?!? Ain’t that much booty in the world. Whatever happened to old fashioned squats? Lunges and even butt bridges help boost the booty. You may not get a stripper booty but you certainly can get a boost. I mean really is having all that worth your health, your well being and even sometimes your limbs!??? Think about it, one set of these injections can change the course of your health or even your life forever. Is it worth it really worth it? To me, ABSOLUTELY NOT. I’ll take a** to grass all day everyday and twice on Sunday.

You can’t out exercise a bad diet!

Posted in Exercise 101 with tags , , on July 11, 2013 by fabfit4life

Client: I workout 5 days a week, I drink half my body weight in water, I eat fruit and vegetables constantly and never skip breakfast, why can’t I loose weight?!! Trainer: Hows your diet? What does your menu consist of on a daily basis, give me an example? Client: Lets see, I have my morning cappuccino and Krispy Kreme donut, then about 2 hours later I have some Le Yogurt with the M&Ms, for lunch I usually have a big salad with a roll and a diet Pepsi, and some more yogurt or a fruit salad for a late afternoon snack and then dinner. Trainer: **** blank stare****
I tell my clients all the time, you cannot out exercise a bad diet! Cappuccino and donut (Krispy Kreme at that?!?) every morning, flavored yogurt and M&Ms daily? Don’t get me started on the diet Pepsi!! I could go on and on about this and similar diets but the end result is the same. You cannot change your body unless you workout and eat properly. Eating several times a day is excellent, it keeps your metabolism running on high which is imperative for weight loss. Not skipping breakfast is also a must, but if you are eating crap…. Proper eating is a major, not just for those who are looking to lose weight, it’s extremely important for your overall health. No matter how much you exercise, 5, 6, 7 times a week, twice a day, that alone will not get you the body you want if you don’t eat properly! If you are serious about getting the body you want and deserve, you must eat healthy and exercise. There is absolutely no way around it…..You simply cannot out exercise a bad diet! Period!

Posted in Exercise 101, Motivation with tags , , , on July 3, 2013 by fabfit4life

How many of you make or have made a new years resolution or things to do list? You know that list of things you plan to do ‘this year’. How many times have you told yourself ‘this is my year, my time?’ You might be thinking the timing of this post is wrong because we are in the middle of the year. But that’s what makes the timing perfect. You see you don’t need a new year, new month, new week or even a new day to start making changes. You need a moment like…right now. Who or what do you want to be? Make that determination and the moment, minute or second you do, start making the necessary changes. Don’t wait for the new year, month or day. Every moment is yours and its up to you to seize them. So tell me…..what are you going to do??

Fasting/Beginner Workout

Posted in Exercise 101, Fasting 101 with tags , , , on July 2, 2013 by fabfit4life

So the fasting month is upon us and one question I have been asked repeatedly is, can I workout while fasting? The answer to that question is yes! Now clearly one should be physically capable of working out and fasting for that matter. Consult with your physician with any questions about this. That said, I have put together a program for those who will be fasting this month. The exercises can be done in the morning before breakfast (suhoor) or in the evening after dinner (Iftar). Depending on your fitness level and stamina you may be able to knock them out during the day. The plan is relatively simple as I understand energy levels will be low while fasting. This is also a good beginner program for those who are new to exercise. For my Fit Fam that exercise regularly, you may find that this program will not challenge you, but challenge really isn’t the purpose. The purpose is to have something you can do throughout the month so that you can keep some form of exercise regimen going. Clearly if the numbers are too low you can increase them or the number of sets. Burpees are a full body workout and are quite challenging. Squats and push-ups are body weight exercises that target the larger muscles which will allow for additional fat burning. You can add in some core exercises, like planks, to make the program even more complete. Be fit, be healthy, be blessed!

Reasons Why You Don’t Achieve Your Fitness Goals

Posted in Motivation with tags , , on July 1, 2013 by fabfit4life

Why don’t you have the body you want? Why are there clothes pushed to the back of your closet because you can’t fit them? Why do you ‘hate mirrors’? So many of these type of questions, yet there is usually one answer. That is because you have not reached your fitness goals. Why is that? Lets look at some of the reasons.
1. You procrastinate. The date you set to start keeps getting pushed back.
2. You don’t make YOU a priority.
3. You exercise but don’t change your diet.
4. You skip breakfast.
5. You jump on every quick fix you can find
6. You don’t stick with it
Now I could name a few more but let’s focus on these. Achieving your goals is actually quite simple. Simple that is, in terms of the formula for success. There are no miracles, magic or tricks. You simply have to eat right and move your body. How important are you to you? You have to love yourself enough to want the best for yourself. Now lets tackle these reasons:
1. Stop procrastinating! Start right now! You don’t need a new year, new month or a new day. Just start making better choices when you eat. Instead of taking the elevator, take the stairs. Make small changes right now, don’t wait another second. DO IT NOW!
2. You make time to do everything for everyone else. Find time for you. You want to take that class at some point, no take it now. Stop putting everyone else’s needs before your own. After all if you keep neglecting yourself at some point there may not be anything left of yourself to give to anyone else.
3. If you eat crap you will look and feel like crap. Period. No matter how much you exercise you cannot out exercise a bad diet. Nutrition and exercise go hand in hand when trying to achieve
your best self.
4. You have heard it time and time again and it is so very true, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Breakfast starts your engine, it gets your metabolism moving. Skipping it will not facilitate weight loss, in fact it will do the exact opposite. You tend to eat more, usually unhealthy food, as your body will crave fatty and sugary foods.
5. As with anything, if it seems to good to be true, more likely than not, it is. Stop trying to find the get slim quick schemes.
6. Consistency is key. Look at this as a lifestyle change, not a diet. Incorporate healthy eating as a part of your life permanently. Sure you will have moments of indulgence, but that doesn’t derail a lifestyle. It’s a part of it. Implement the 80/20 rule, eat well 80% of the time and indulge 20% of the time. That way you won’t find yourself binging on that favorite food that your ‘diet’ prohibits.
Being healthy and fit is a lifestyle. It becomes a part of who you are. Stop sabotaging yourself. ‘I hate looking and feeling my best’ was said by NO ONE…ever! Decide that you are worth these changes and make them….TODAY!
